I’m delighted to share with you a taste of my book in addition to a sampling of some articles and editorials I’ve written in the past. I wrote this book in part because it seems that in the public mind, faith is often associated with extremism and intolerance—faith often used to separate one group from another, and even to justify violence. Not so the people in this book. Their faith is the complete opposite: their faith reconciles, not divides; alleviates pain, not causes it; serves, not dominates.
I didn’t write this book for me, although it brought me back to where I got my start in public service—in the faith community during the Civil Rights movement. Nor did I write it for those portrayed in the book. I wanted to spotlight the other side of the faith story—an affirming, joyous side, and to lead us all to the most important of questions: how can I be there for my neighbor? It is my hope that Hope Matters will give you a taste of the inspiration I felt when I was fortunate enough to have begun this writing odyssey about three years ago.
